Mike Dillard Sues James Stein Over Manipulative SEO Techniques

Mike Dillard Lawsuit

Ok, so this is interesting. It seems that Mike Dillard is suing James Stein of Articles Productions for “manipulative search engine optimization techniques” and had cost him $150,000 in potential revenue. Here is a snippet from the affidavit:

“Stein quickly followed-up his discussion by identifying and targeting certain search-engine keywords to divert web traffic to his site, including:- “elevation group, the elevation, us elevation, best elevation, elevation media, elevation marketing” – to opportunistically palm off on my success…”

“By late on the night of December 14, 2010, Stein was expanding…by manipulating the ability of existing and prospective online customers to reach The Elevation Group website through a Google search by manipulative “search engine optimization” techniques…”

It will be interesting to see the result of the lawsuit. After all, it seems that the only thing that James Stein has been guilty of is extremely effective article marketing although I suspect there is a bit more to the lawsuit than that.

Having said that, Stein hasn’t exactly been respectful of Dillard. I first knew of James Stein through Better Networker (created by Mike Dillard), and even back then it seemed that Stein had a vendetta against Dillard. He appeared to me, for want of a better word, as a bit of a troll. So I’m not exactly surprised that it has come to this. If you are constantly critical and negative towards someone, perhaps unjustly (I’ve never had a problem with any Dillard product) it’s probably going to turn ugly at some point.

I also found it funny that James Stein has already got content out there with his own slant on the story which you can check out here. Notice how he uses language like “he lacks the ability to outrank me” and “which Articles Productions dominates” XD

What do you think? Does Mike Dillard have a legitimate case? Is James Stein just a good guy bringing the truth?

    Hi Damien,

Not sure how this one will turn out. I respect Mike Dillard and everything has done in and with the industry. The question is, does he have a legitimate case? I’m not sure of all the specifics, but it seems that someone had the ability to take advantage of being able to “score” better on Google. Does that mean someone promoting a product they created can sue someone else if they rank better on Google for the same or similar product? Look out Amazon! :) Unfortunately, Mike does not own the keywords or phrases. James may have intentionally tried to “steal” this traffic, but to prove it in a court of law may be tough.

Yeah it’s an interesting one Steven. I’m not exactly a fan of this James guy but I don’t know if Mike has a leg to stand on.

I am a member of Article Productions forums and also use Article Productions to help with article marketing and also SEO. Like James or not, the guy knows what he is talking about when it comes to SEO and the tools he makes for that purpose are top notch and the best I have seen anywhere for SEO and article marketing.

I have also brought many of Mike Dillard’s products. I have not been disappointed in any of his products truthfully. However, I will probably not buy any of his products anymore. Especially, since Mike Dillard has gone to giving unlicensed financial advice with Elevation Group. I think much of what I have seen in the emails and websites about the Elevation Group it seems just rehashed stuff you can get from a Robert Kiyosaki book.

I honestly think this was a bad move by Mike Dillard, you have one guy who is gone after keywords related to your business and he is outranking Mike and even his hundreds of affiliates (some of them are considered Gurus) for those same keywords. It seems like Mike Dillard is losing in marketing techniques and calling foul by bringing the courts in. From my very unprofessional opinion the lawsuit is very weak to say the best.

In the end, it gives James more publicity and ammunition for his product Article Productions as he is able to beat a marketing guru and his affiliates by using tools that James has created in Article Productions. James is hopping all over this as you can see from the press releases and there is also a capture page giving a free report of how he outranked Mike already out there.

In light of the lawsuit, who would you rather listen to about marketing and SEO, James or Mike?

It will be interesting to see what happens with the case.

James Stein is a troll and nothing more. He thinks hes something when really he is just a nasty man with no plan. I hope he loses the case and goes bankrupt.

It’s hard to know at this point if Mike has any real argument. I think it’s going to be dirty as the case moves forward.

Internet troll James Stein lost the case and has been ordered to pay almost $500,000 in damages. The case was not about SEO, but about defamation. The SEO aspect simply proved that James was guilty OF INTENT TO CAUSE HARM.

Stein lost because he never bothered to show up. He doesn’t have a pot to piss in so Dillard really only won a moral victory.

Stein destroyed many a good marketer’s reputation in the process. People who were doing all the SEO for him (he couln’t SEO with a freakin rock). These people were made to appear to be his partner but he just took all of the money .. ran .. made it look like the supposed partners did it all but STEIN was the one who profited.

  • Disappointed

I hate James lost because using his product like article production had my site ranking very well with only 2 articles.  I hate that Mike Dillard destroyed this man business because from what I can tell Mike’s products are not that impressive.  The elevation group is very questionable – giving financial advice without a license.

I was a member of better networker at the time that James Stein began his tirade on Mike Dillard and other forum members. I was also a member of the article forum run by James and saw all of his rants to that community.

It was a blatant, openly public mission of James’ to ruin Dillard for banning James from the better networker, which was forum due to the fact James was constantly flaming, insulting, and threatening any  and all forum members that disagreed with or had a counter opinion to him.

He openly bragged that he would destroy Dillard’s business via, but not limited to seo methods for the sole purpose of slandering Mike as well as posting misleading information to current or potential Dillard customers with the intent to sell them his products and services.

He was also guilty of blatant copyright infringement by blatantly creating content, domain names and services that were nothing more than a slight spin on Dillard’s trademarked names. For example, The Association of Better Networkers is a paid membership offered in Dillard’s product line. James attempted to mislead consumers by promoting the Better Networkers Association but was in fact using the trademark “Association of Better Networkers” to promote it. You can find videos on youtube to prove this fact. *youtube*com/user/betternetworkers*

When confronted I watched him then turn his sites on people like Richard Bravo and Fernando Ceballos, who are both incredible leaders in that community. I believe Richard was even the target of an extended slander campaign but I haven’t heard any details if another lawsuit is pending.

James got what he deserved. He is an arrogant braggart who thought he could beat the laws just because he said so. He didn’t even show up for his appearance and was stupid enough to openly brag that he had no intention of appearing and would still win because he was righteous.

You reap what you sow – PERIOD.
